Genmaicha – natural flavoured every day tea

If someone would ask what my favourite tea is, it would be impossible to answer. But as an everyday tea, I love Genmaicha pretty much. Have you heard of Genmaicha before? It is Japanese green tea with roasted rice. Sometimes, there is even popped rice corn inside, which gives it a beautiful look. The taste is nutty and roasted with a light umami flavour from the green tea. When I tried it the first time, the taste was unusual, but after two or three cups, I really couldn’t get enough of this flavourful tea. In former times, when tea was a rare and expensive good, Genmaicha was made for poor people who did not have enough money for pure green tea. So, to sell tea, which the lower class could buy, the tea was diluted with roasted rice, which made it much cheaper. I’m glad they did so because the rice gives the tea a pleasant aroma. If you are like me, preferring a nutty taste to a fruity flavour, you will love Genmaicha. If you are more of a fruity person, there are many tea blends with green tea and fruits or flowers in tea stores. But for many of them, the fruit taste is dominant and suppresses the taste of the green tea. Genmaicha has an excellent balance of the rice and the tea flavour, which results in an elegant composition.

To brew Genmaicha, you need approximately one teaspoon Genmaicha for 100ml water. The water should have a temperature of 80°C. The brewing time shouldn’t be more than 45 seconds. If you prepare it that way, you can usually make up to three infusions. Feel free to play around with the brewing time and the amount of tea and try to find your optimum.

Have you ever tried Genmaicha? Which kind of tea do you like the most? Tell me in the comments!
